Schools across Scotland's 32 local authorities are joining in the Homecoming Scotland celebrations.
Dallas Primary School, Moray, has organised a school reunion for all past pupils and a blog has been set up for former pupils to share their memories of the school. The entire school has been involved in creating a Homecoming calendar and 'Top Trump' cards celebrating famous Scottish figures. Extensive research to create the cards provided a depth of knowledge of a wide range of contemporary and historical Scottish figures. The Homecoming journey is being exhibited in the school, and there are plans to showcase the work in a Heritage Centre in the village of Dallas.
Dunoon Grammar School, Argyll & Bute, has created a Homecoming advert on their School TV station, Dunoon Grammar School TV. Dougie MacLean, who wrote the song 'Caledonia', gave the pupils the go-ahead to recreate this year's Homecoming 2009 advert for the station featuring his song. A Homecoming website has also inspired past pupils from across the world to get in touch.
'Homecoming activities are helping pupils to develop a deeper understanding of Scotland's place in the world and the contribution Scottish people have made, and continue to make, to society. They have given pupils, teachers, parents and community members the opportunity to come together and work on interdisciplinary aspects of the curriculum. It is in this way that the Homecoming year will leave a legacy in schools,' said Professor Kay Livingston, Programme Director, International Education, Innovation and Research Policy at LTS.
A Homecoming study visit to Nova Scotia will take place in October 2009 and an event to celebrate using Homecoming to engage with Curriculum for Excellence is planned for 23 November.
